Andy Warhol always loved powerful women, which included Elizabeth Taylor. He painted this portrait, Liz in Red, in 1963 from a personal photograph he had of the iconic actress. It was done in acrylic paint and silkscreen ink on linen. The background is a provocative shade of red, which alludes to her beauty and powerful attraction for men. Her dark hair puffs around her regal neck in a layered bob.
Even though her portrait is an exact resemblance, Warhol creates a surreal appearance with overlapping color in her eyeshadow and lipstick. The makeup is a throwback to her renowned role of Cleopatra. Her legendary violet eyes virtually glow on the canvas, and her Mona Lisa smile makes observers wonder what she is thinking. This red version is one of the many colors that Warhol did of the same portrait. It is a tribute to one of the ultimate legends of Hollywood from one of the greatest artists of our time.
