A depiction of the struggle for freedom of speech during wartime, “CND Soldiers” by Banksy depicts two soldiers choosing to fight with an illicit message of peace. Alluding to both his renown as a graffiti artist and his social cry for peace, this painting came to prominence when displayed in London in 2007.

Featuring covert glances, the soldiers obviously act under duress. One shoulders his weapon and wields a brush as he paints a graffiti peace symbol on the wall. His companion crouches beside him keeping watch.

The large, incomplete peace sign overshadows the soldiers. Black stenciling of the soldiers at the bottom of the work contrasts vividly with the bright red of the peace sign at the center of the canvas. The dripping red paint suggest the desire to promote peace resides within the lifeblood of each man, and can be greater than the battle imposed upon him.
