Helmut Newton was a German-Australian photographer widely known for his dramatic and provocative black-and-white photographs of nude and scantily-clad women. His photographs, often featured in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, have dominated high-fashion’s aesthetic sensibilities for over a half-century.
Since the 1950s, few photographers have been so closely associated with the female form as Helmut Newton. Arielle after Haircut exemplifies the starkly erotic black-and-white portraits for which he became famous. The subject, Arielle Burgelin, is descended from a long line of French aristocrats. In the 1980s, she posed for Newton and other photographers, including William Klein, before ultimately pursuing a career in music.
